Matt comes from musical parents. His father, who is an accomplished guitar player and singer/songwriter, taught Matt how to play and sing “Show Me The Way To Go Home” on the Ukulele at age 4. Inspired by the drumming of Guy Patterson, a character in the movie “That Thing You Do”, Matt began playing drums at age 10. He attended Highland Secondary School in Dundas Ontario where he played in the Orchestral and Jazz bands, and co-founded the Hardcore Punk band Non-Passive Resistance. NPR became a prominent fixture in the Hamilton Ontario Punk Rock revival scene of the early 2000’s, opening for large Punk acts such as The Casualties, The Forgotten Rebels, and D.O.A. Upon completing an Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Applied Music from Mohawk College in 2009, Matt worked on cruise ships as a Show Band Drummer, playing various musical reviews for Carnival Cruise Lines. After finishing a Bachelor of Music with Honours degree from Humber College in 2013, where he also received The Zildjian Scholarship, Matt studied with world renowned Jazz drum teacher Jim Blackley and played in many jazz clubs including the legendary Rex Hotel. His improvisational skills were refined at Sauce on the Danforth, where he performed every Monday night with the Experimental Funk band Out of Towners for several years.
Fueled by the early influence of his father’s songwriting and a desire to help bring new songs to life, Matt eventually found his calling as a Session Drummer, and has played on many albums such as Matty Simpson “Strange Weather”, Deeps “In The Aftermath of Last Night”, Hailee Rose “Introducing”, Kirby “Self Titled”, Andre Bisson “Till the Real Thing” and “Bad Scene”, Brad Cheeseman(Juno Nominated) “Mixed Messages EP”, Abby Carey “Yours” Jesse Daniel Smith “Are People Really Dying in the Daytime”, Ian Andrews “Eclipse” , Full Gown “Ep” , Sarah Church “Letting Go”, and James Gray “New Friends that Talk Like Old Friends”.
